In addition to the IKWF age divisions (tots, bantams, intermediates, novice, senior), Naperville Wrestling Club structures our 4-5 practice groups by age, experience, commitment, and previous success. This allows each wrestler to develop at an appropriate pace. Coaches will move wrestlers up or down groups as needed. This system is fluid and our way to organize our large club
GRADE & INFO
Rookies #1 - all K-2 wrestlers in their first or second season
Rookies #2 - all 3-6 wrestlers in their first or second season
The goal of this group is to learn the fundamentals, review common wrestling positions, and most importantly have fun so these young grapplers continue with the sport.
PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS
NWC ROOKIES #1 & #2 levels will have the opportunity to attend up to three (3) scheduled practices each week. These young wrestlers should try and make two (2) regular practices plus one (1) optional practice per week to allow them the ability to productively build a sequence of skills and knowledge. Practices will consist of learning basic wrestling techniques, drilling common wrestling positions, live wrestling and finishing each night with a fun game.
COMPETITION EXPECTATIONS
Competing at this age level is a family decision. While large tournaments can be overwhelming, NWC will usually schedule a monthly non-tournament competition. Occasionally, a beginner only tournament is scheduled too. If your young wrestler is confident, enjoys the sport, is finding success and can handle the pressure of winning and losing then competing at weekend tournaments can be considered. At most this group should compete 1-2 times a month. Having your young or beginner wrestler only practice their first year and not compete is also supported by NWC coaches. The majority of Beginners will complete their season the first week of February. For those who have competed at tournaments and can manage a couple more weeks of practice, wrestling at the IKWF Regional is a possibility.
GRADE & INFO
Experienced #3 - wrestlers in 2nd-6th grade that have 3+years of experience or those who have some competition experience, or non elite 7th and 8th graders
The goal of the Experience #3 level is to master basic wrestling skills, drills, positions, and strategies.
PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS
Experience #3 level wrestlers will have the opportunity to attend 3 scheduled practices each week. Since wrestling development is sequential and taught in a progressive process all Experience #3 level wrestlers should attend a minimum of 2 practices a week. Practicing 3 times a week when possible should be considered for the wrestlers who are planning on competing in the IKWF Regional. Experience #3 level practices are typically 75-90 minutes long.
COMPETITION EXPECTATIONS
Experience #3 level wrestlers will have an opportunity to compete 2-3 times a month at weekend events. Some Experience #3 level wrestlers may choose to only practice and not compete their first season while more experienced and older Experience #3 level wrestlers may want to compete each weekend. Non-tournament competitions will be scheduled each month and are great for all wrestlers, especially those who do not want to commit to tournaments. The Experience #3 level wrestlers who compete regularly during the season should consider wrestling at the IKWF Regional and competing throughout the IKWF State Series. Highly successful 8 & 9 year olds should consider wrestling in the Bantam 8u and Midget 10u State Championships
AGE & INFO
Elite #4 - wrestlers of any age that coaches have determined based on previous success and known ability
Elite #4 level wrestlers can maintain a high level pace and focus at practice, have goals of being state qualifiers, place winners, and are driven in preparing themselves for high school wrestling.
PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS
Elite #4 level wrestlers will have the opportunity to attend three (3) scheduled practices each week. All Elite #4 level wrestlers should try and attend all three (3 ) practices weekly. Elite wrestlers who have the highest goals should consider attending practice 4 days a week when possible. Practice length is on average 90-105 minutes.
COMPETITION EXPECTATIONS
Elite #4 level wrestlers will have a full schedule of weekend competition. All Elite #4 level wrestlers should compete at a minimum of 2-3 times each month. All Elite #4 level wrestlers are expected to enter the IKWF Regional and compete throughout the IKWF State Series.
